About this site … awaiting the WinXPocalypse / WinMageddon

“Physician, Heal Thyself”

You’d be surprised [ or not ] at how often that phrase runs through my head when I’m listening to / reading / watching other people spout their stuff – but never when I’m listening to myself. (!)

Of course, the people who need Win XP help the most are the ones who realize it least. Yes, those are the people who are not only continuing to run Windows XP, but also are unaware that it requires periodic patches – on Patch Tuesday, no less.

Of the people who are aware that Windows XP support is running out, they may be divided into two groups: 1. Those who are upgrading and 2. Those who are saying “Let’s watch it and see what REALLY happens”. Hardy, Adventurous Souls.

So back to the ‘Physician” opener. It has been no secret that Windows XP will go away. I’ve been reading about it for years, why not put a web site together and share some knowledge? Knowledge, alas, can be a dangerous thing, especially when meted out in small portion. After all, those who can, do; those who cannot, teach. So …  I “did”.

As this web site continued to come together I decided to augment my knowledge and opinions with some experience. Along the way, I learned more than I wanted to know about backups, BSODs and targeting web searches to get some very specific search results.

Some of the good things I’ve learned: it’s possible to take an old Compaq Evo from 2003 to 2014 (sorta ) with PCMover and Win 7 from eBay. ( Hey, Win 7 is supported through 2020). Linux can be made to resemble Windows.  ( Or was it the other way around)? Linux is Free. So is LibreOffice. They actually function together. Win 7 actually does run for 30 days w/o activation – download it and see for yourself.

So-so things I’ve learned: It’s possible to blue-screen Win 7 with PCMover. When that happens, they are glad to help but expect you to buy their support package first. No, thanks on that. Win 7 on a Compaq Evo is possible. Is it practical? Hey, I thought XP on Evo was SOTA just a few short years ago. Taking a picture of the BSOD may be more help than looking at the error file. IOBit has recently come out with PCTransfer ( FREE, my favorite price ) which may or may not help move from Windows XP to a newer version. Some obvious .com names had not yet been purchased ( opportunity abounds ). Nero 6… does not run under Win 7 – I think they planned it that way. Some people claim Nero 6 does Win 7 – are they lying through their teeth? Or teething through their lies… YouTube is NOT all cat videos. Facebook is NOT all about teenagers – that’s why they are abandoning it.
